How to Sell Gift Memberships (and Make Them Your Holiday Bestseller)

In this article

Every December, people hunt for presents for the friend who has everything. A cooking class library, a year of coffee, a photography community or a language course is a better answer than another candle. Gift memberships are also one of the few marketing channels where your customers find new members for you.

This guide shows how to sell gift memberships: how they work, how to set them up in WooCommerce, how to market them at the right moments, and how to keep gift recipients after the gift runs out.

Key takeaways

A gift membership is bought by one person and claimed by another, often on a date the buyer picks.

Gift buyers bring you members who would never have found you, at no ad cost.

The delivery date and a personal message turn a membership into a real present.

The work is not done at the claim. Plan how to convert recipients when the gift ends.

What Is a Gift Membership?

A gift membership is a membership bought by one person for someone else. At checkout, the buyer enters the recipient’s name, e-mail, a message and a delivery date. On that date, the recipient gets a link to claim the gift, creates an account and their membership starts. The buyer pays; the recipient enjoys it.

How a gift membership works from purchase to claim

Why Gift Memberships Are Worth It

Free customer acquisition. The buyer markets you to the recipient, with a personal recommendation built in.

Seasonal cash. December, Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day bring buyers who are already in a spending mood.

No shipping, no stock. A digital gift can be bought on 24 December and delivered on the 25th.

A second chance with lapsed fans. People who never joined themselves will happily buy it for a friend.

What to Offer as a Gift

Fixed-length gifts work best. Recipients did not choose to be billed every month, so do not set them up as an open-ended subscription on the buyer’s card. Good options:

Gift optionExample priceWhy it works
3-month gift$49An easy impulse buy, long enough to get hooked
12-month gift$149Feels generous; best for close family
Gift box + membership$79Something to unwrap, for physical stores

If you sell subscription boxes, a gift subscription that ships three or six boxes is a classic. See how to start a subscription box business.

How to Set Up Gift Memberships in WooCommerce

With FlexWoo Memberships Pro, gifting is built in:

Turn on Enable Gifting under FW Memberships → Settings → Overview.

On a membership product, allow it to be bought as a gift.

At checkout, the buyer adds the recipient’s name, e-mail, a message and a delivery date.

The recipient gets a claim link and redeems it with the Gift Claim block or the [flexwoo_gift_claim] shortcode on a page you choose.

Under FW Memberships → Gifts you can track every gift, fix a recipient’s e-mail if the buyer mistyped it, resend or extend claim links, and cancel or revoke a gift. That last part matters more than you would think: misspelt e-mail addresses are the most common gift support request.

Make the Gift Feel Like a Gift

Design a gift page with photos, what the recipient gets and the gift options. Link to it from your menu in season.

Write a warm claim e-mail. The recipient did not sign up for anything; tell them who sent it and what they can do first.

Offer a printable gift card PDF the buyer can put in an envelope, for people who want something to hand over.

Let buyers pick the delivery date and say so loudly: “Delivered on the morning of the 25th”.

When to Promote Gift Memberships

Gift membership marketing calendar

Start earlier than you think. Gift buyers plan ahead, and search interest in gift ideas rises weeks before each holiday. Then push hard again in the last week before Christmas, when physical gifts can no longer arrive in time and a digital gift wins.

Turn Gift Recipients Into Paying Members

A gift is a free trial someone else paid for. Make the most of it:

Onboard them like any member. A clear first step and a quick win, as in our welcome e-mail templates.

Remind them before it ends. The “expiring soon” e-mail is your conversion e-mail. Tell them what they will lose and how to continue.

Offer a thank-you price to recipients who continue, for example their first paid month at half price.

Thank the buyer and offer them a gift for themselves.

FAQ: Gift Memberships

The buyer purchases a membership as a gift and enters the recipient’s name, e-mail, a message and a delivery date. On that date the recipient receives a claim link, creates an account and the membership starts.
Yes. In FlexWoo Memberships Pro the buyer chooses a delivery date at checkout, so a gift can arrive on a birthday or Christmas morning.
You can fix the recipient’s e-mail and resend the claim link under FW Memberships → Gifts. You can also extend a claim link or cancel and revoke a gift there.
Usually not. Recipients did not agree to be billed, so fixed-length gifts such as three or twelve months work best. Invite recipients to continue on their own plan before the gift ends.
Yes. A gift subscription with a fixed number of boxes is a popular holiday gift. Before launching it, place a test gift order and check how the recipient’s delivery address is collected in your setup.
Start in early November around Black Friday, keep promoting through mid-December, and push again in the final week, when digital gifts that arrive instantly have the advantage.

Let Your Members Do the Marketing

Gift memberships are word-of-mouth you can sell. Offer a simple fixed-length gift, make the delivery date and message part of the experience, promote it around the big gifting moments and work hard to keep recipients when the gift ends. Done well, December can become your biggest month for new members.
